Summary
Lafoensia pacari, commonly known as Dedaleiro, is a deciduous tree native to the Cerrado and Pantanal biomes of Brazil and parts of Paraguay, where it thrives in well-drained soils of open woodlands and savannas. It typically grows to a height of 15-20 feet (4.5-6 meters) with a similar spread. Dedaleiro is notable for its straight trunk and dense, rounded crown. It produces showy purple flowers during the spring and early summer, which are followed by woody capsules containing numerous seeds. The bark is rough and gray, adding textural interest to the landscape.
Dedaleiro is valued for its medicinal properties and is used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments. In cultivation, it is appreciated for its beautiful flowers and its adaptability to different soil types, although it prefers well-drained soils. It is suitable for urban planting, border planting, and as a specimen tree in parks and large gardens. Dedaleiro requires full sun to part shade and moderate watering, with increased tolerance for drought once established. There are no widely known cultivars of this species in the horticultural trade. Gardeners should be aware that while it is not generally prone to serious diseases or pests, it may require some maintenance to shape the crown and remove any damaged branches.CC BY-SA 4.0
