Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lamium galeobdolon, commonly known as Yellow Archangel, is a semi-evergreen perennial herb native to forests, hedgerows, and shaded areas across Europe and parts of Asia. It typically grows to a height of 40 to 80 cm (16 to 31 in) and spreads via underground runners, forming dense mats of foliage. The soft yellow flowers are borne in axial clusters and appear in whorls on a terminal spike, blooming from April to June. The foliage is often variegated with silver markings, adding to its ornamental value.
Yellow Archangel is valued for its attractive foliage and flowers, as well as its ability to cover ground quickly, making it a popular choice for shaded garden areas, woodland gardens, and as an underplanting for shrubs and trees. It is also used to control erosion on shaded slopes. While it prefers part shade or full shade, it is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. It requires low to medium amounts of water once established. However, gardeners should be aware of its potential to spread aggressively and become invasive outside its native range. It is advisable to plant it where its growth can be contained or in areas where its spread is desired.CC BY-SA 4.0
