Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lampranthus productus, commonly known as Purple Ice Plant, is an evergreen succulent or subshrub native to the arid regions and rocky outcrops of South Africa. It typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters), forming a dense, mat-like ground cover. The Purple Ice Plant has fleshy, bright green leaves that help retain moisture, and during the winter and spring, it produces a profusion of daisy-like flowers with vibrant purple and pink hues that are highly attractive to pollinators.
The Purple Ice Plant is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant floral display, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, coastal planting, and xeriscaping. It is also used as a ground cover to control erosion on slopes. This plant thrives in full sun and requires well-draining soil, preferably sandy or gravelly, to prevent root rot. It is highly adaptable to poor soils and can tolerate maritime exposure. While generally low-maintenance, it is susceptible to fungal diseases if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. It is also not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures.CC BY-SA 4.0
