Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lampranthus spectabilis, commonly known as Trailing Ice Plant, is a succulent perennial herb native to the rocky slopes and sandy plains of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces in South Africa. It typically forms a mat-like ground cover, reaching heights of 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) with a spread of up to 24 inches (60 cm). The plant is characterized by its fleshy, bright green leaves and daisy-like flowers that come in a variety of colors, including pink, purple, and yellow, blooming profusely in late winter to spring. The flowers are particularly showy, opening fully in bright sunlight.
Trailing Ice Plant is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant floral display, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, coastal planting, and as a ground cover in arid landscapes. It is also used to stabilize slopes and for xeriscaping. While it thrives in full sun and requires minimal water once established, it is important to plant it in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Overwatering and poor drainage are common issues that can lead to plant decline. It is not known for having aggressive roots or being particularly susceptible to diseases, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. However, it can become invasive in some Mediterranean climates, so care should be taken when planting it outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
