Summary

Lathyrus splendens, commonly known as Pride of California, is a deciduous perennial vine or herb with coiling tendrils, native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub of California, as well as Baja California in Northwestern Mexico. It typically climbs to heights of 6 feet (1.8 meters) or more when supported. The leaves are pinnate with 6 to 8 linear to oval-shaped leaflets, each a few centimeters long, accompanied by wavy-margined stipules. From late spring to early summer, it produces striking inflorescences of up to 6 bright to deep red flowers, each about 3 centimeters wide, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.

Pride of California is valued for its vibrant red flowers and ability to attract wildlife. It is often used in native plant gardens, as a climbing plant on fences or trellises, and in restoration projects where its nitrogen-fixing ability can improve soil fertility. It requires minimal maintenance once established, thriving in full sun and tolerating drought conditions. It prefers well-drained soils and is suitable for xeriscaping. Gardeners should note that while it is generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range, but care should be taken to prevent its spread in non-native areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
