Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lathyrus vestitus, commonly known as Pacific pea, is a perennial vine native to the coastal ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills of California, extending into Baja California, Mexico. It thrives in a variety of habitats including chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and open woodlands, often climbing over shrubs or other supports. This species typically exhibits a climbing habit with the aid of coiling tendrils and can reach lengths of up to 12 feet. The leaves are pinnately compound with leaflets and tendrils that enable climbing. From late winter to early summer, it produces inflorescences of showy pea flowers that can be bright violet, light to medium purple, or white, attracting pollinators such as bees.
Pacific pea is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to cover unsightly areas or provide quick screening. It is used in native plant gardens, habitat restoration projects, and for erosion control on slopes. In cultivation, Lathyrus vestitus prefers well-drained soils, tolerates a range of soil types including clay, and requires moderate watering. It can grow in full sun to part shade conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it may need occasional pruning to control growth and remove dead material. There are no major disease problems, but it can become leggy if not supported or pruned.CC BY-SA 4.0
