Summary

Lavandula dentata, commonly known as French lavender, is a perennial herb native to parts of tthe Mediterranean region, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where it thrives in open, sunny habitats with well-drained, sandy or rocky soils. It typically grows to 60 cm (24 in) tall and wide, with a mounded form. The gray-green leaves are linear or lance-shaped with toothed edges and a lightly woolly texture, which contributes to its drought resistance. French lavender blooms with long-lasting, narrow spikes of purple flowers topped with pale violet bracts from late spring to early autumn, providing a long season of interest. The flowers are highly aromatic and attractive to bees and butterflies.

French lavender is valued for its fragrant foliage and flowers, which are used in sachets and potpourris. It is also popular in herb gardens, rockeries, and as a low hedge or border plant. This lavender is relatively easy to maintain, requiring minimal watering once established and thriving in poor to moderately fertile soils. It prefers full sun and can tolerate coastal conditions. While it can survive light frosts, it requires protection or shelter in areas with harsh winter conditions. The cultivar ’Royal Crown’ has been recognized for its garden performance. Potential problems include root rot in poorly drained soils and damage from frost in colder climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
