Summary

Lavandula latifolia, commonly known as Broadleaved Lavender, is an evergreen shrub native to the open woodlands and scrub areas of the Western Mediterranean, particularly in Spain and Portugal. It typically grows to 30–80 cm tall and is characterized by its broad, evergreen leaves that are 3–6 cm long and 5–8 mm broad. The flowers of Broadleaved Lavender are pale lilac and are produced on spikes 2–5 cm long at the top of slender, leafless stems 20–50 cm long. The flowering season extends from June to September, depending on the local weather conditions. The fruit of Lavandula latifolia is a nut, indehiscent, monosperm of hardened pericarp, consisting of 4 small nuts that often remain locked inside the calyx tube.

Broadleaved Lavender is valued for its strong fragrance and is often used in the production of essential oils. It is also appreciated for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners. In cultivation, it is commonly used for border planting, aromatic gardens, and as a bee-friendly plant. Broadleaved Lavender requires full sun and well-drained soil, and it is relatively tolerant of low water conditions once established. While it is generally disease-resistant, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is not known to have aggressive roots or to be particularly invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
