Summary

Layia platyglossa, commonly known as Coastal Tidytips, is an annual herb native to California’s grasslands, coastal prairies, and open areas within chaparral and oak woodlands. It is also found in Baja California. This species typically grows less than 1 foot (0.30 m) tall and spreads about 4–12 inches (10–30 cm) wide. Coastal Tidytips has a glandular appearance with narrow, rough, hairy leaves and usually develops a taproot, though it can sometimes have fibrous roots. The flower heads are showy, with five to eighteen yellow ray flowers that have distinctive white tips and a central cluster of many yellow disk flowers. The outer ray flowers are bright golden yellow with sharp-margined white tips, blooming mainly in spring.

Coastal Tidytips is valued for its daisy-like, attractive flowers, which contribute to its popularity as an ornamental plant in traditional, wildlife, and habitat gardens. It is also a common component in commercial wildflower seed mixes. The plant thrives in full sun and requires low to medium amounts of water, making it suitable for xeriscaping and drought-tolerant gardens. It prefers well-drained soils and is relatively easy to maintain. While it is not known for significant problems, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Coastal Tidytips is not typically associated with aggressive roots or invasiveness, but it can self-seed prolifically under ideal conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
