Summary
Lepidospartum squamatum, commonly known as California broomsage or scale broom, is a deciduous shrub native to the chaparral and desert scrub communities of central and southern California, Baja California, and Arizona. It often exceeds 7 feet in height and is adapted to sandy, gravelly soils in arid environments, such as dry alluvial habitats like arroyos and washes. This plant is characterized by its woolly branches and small, scale-like leaves that help reduce water loss. From late summer to fall, it produces inflorescences of yellow tubular disc florets that are highly attractive to a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and tarantula hawk wasps.
California broomsage is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid regions. Its distinctive woolly appearance and yellow flowers add textural and color interest to the landscape. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun with low water needs once established. It is important to plant it in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. California broomsage is not known for being invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not spread beyond desired areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
