Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lepidosperma laterale, commonly known as Variable Sword-sedge, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including coastal heathlands, open forests, and alpine grasslands in southeastern Australia, as well as New Caledonia and New Zealand. It typically reaches up to 3 feet in height and is noted for its glossy, strap-like leaves with distinctive orange-reddish bases. This sedge produces inconspicuous brown flowers on a panicle primarily in spring and summer. The plant’s natural distribution includes New South Wales and it contributes to the biodiversity of riparian scrub communities in Tasmania, where it supports the larvae of several moth species.
Variable Sword-sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in a range of conditions, from sandy soils to rocky areas, making it a versatile choice for gardeners. It is often used in mass plantings for soil stabilization and as an ornamental grass in water-wise gardens due to its low water requirements. The plant prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Its resilience and the textural contrast its foliage provides make it a popular choice for borders and native plant gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
