Leucadendron stelligerum, commonly known as Agulhas Conebush, is an evergreen shrub native to the fynbos region of Southwestern South Africa, characterized by Mediterranean-type shrubland with winter rainfall and dry summers. This species typically grows to a height of 2 meters and is adapted to its native fire-prone environment. The Agulhas Conebush has a unique reproductive strategy, with seeds that are stored in woody cones (serotinous cones) on the female plants. These cones release seeds after fire events, which then germinate in the nutrient-rich ash. The plant exhibits sexual dimorphism, with separate male and female plants. The male flowers produce pollen, while the female flowers develop into cones that hold the seeds. The flowers are not particularly showy, with the male flowers being a subtle yellow and the female flowers a brighter red, blooming from July to August.

The Agulhas Conebush is valued for its striking foliage and architectural form, making it a unique addition to drought-tolerant gardens and landscapes focused on fire-wise planting. It is often used in ornamental plantings, xeriscaping, and as a focal point in rock gardens. This shrub thrives in full sun and requires well-drained, acidic soils with low water once established, reflecting its adaptation to the fynbos habitat. While it is generally low-maintenance, it is important to avoid overwatering and to provide conditions that mimic its natural environment.
