Estimated Native Range
Summary
Leucospermum catherinae, commonly known as Catherine-Wheel Pincushion, is an evergreen shrub native to the fynbos region of Southwestern South Africa. This member of the Proteaceae family can reach up to 4 meters (13 feet) in height and is characterized by its large, upright growth habit. The shrub’s distinctive flower heads, which mature to a disc shape about 15 centimeters (6 inches) in diameter, consist of pale orange flowers. Each flower features a long style that transitions from orange to coppery bronze with age, culminating in a thickened magenta tip that curves clockwise, resembling the spokes of a spinning wheel. The flowering season extends from September to December, with the blooms being particularly showy and attractive to birds, especially nectar-feeding species.
The Catherine-Wheel Pincushion is valued for its unique and ornamental flower heads, which add a striking visual element to gardens. It is suitable for cultivation in Mediterranean climates and is often used in ornamental plantings, borders, and as a focal point in gardens. This shrub thrives in full sun and requires well-drained, acidic to neutral soils. While it tolerates low to medium water conditions, it benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. It is important to note that Leucospermum catherinae is sensitive to phosphorus, so fertilizers for proteaceous plants should be used. Potential problems include root rot if overwatered and susceptibility to fungal diseases in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
