Summary

Leucospermum reflexum, commonly known as Rocket Pincushion, is an evergreen shrub native to the fynbos region, which includes mountain slopes and coastal plains in the Western Cape of South Africa. It typically grows from a single trunk and can reach a height of 2 to 5 meters with a similar spread. The branches are adorned with smooth grey bark. The plant is characterized by its striking flower heads, which consist of dark orange (rarely pale yellow) 4-merous flowers. From these blooms, long styles of the same color emerge, curving downwards during the flowering period, which lasts from late August to December. The flowers are quite showy and attract birds and insects, making it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens.

Rocket Pincushion is valued for its unique and ornamental flowers, which make it a focal point in any garden. It is drought-tolerant and suited to Mediterranean-style gardens, rockeries, and coastal landscapes. It thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil, preferably acidic and low in phosphates due to its adaptation to nutrient-poor native soils. Overwatering and phosphorus-rich fertilizers should be avoided to prevent root rot and other diseases. While it is not commonly affected by pests, it can be susceptible to fungal infections if conditions are too wet. It is not known to be invasive when grown outside its native range but should be monitored to ensure it does not become a problem.CC BY-SA 4.0
