Summary

Leucothoe axillaris, commonly known as Coastal Dog-hobble or Swamp Dog-laurel, is an evergreen shrub native to moist, acidic woodlands, stream banks, and boggy areas in the southeastern United States. It typically grows up to 2 meters (7 feet) tall and wide, with arching branches and glossy, leathery leaves that can reach up to 8 cm (3 inches) long. In spring, it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped, white flowers that are subtly fragrant and attract pollinators. The flowers give way to dry, inconspicuous capsules. Coastal Dog-hobble is appreciated for its attractive foliage and graceful form, making it suitable for use in shaded borders, woodland gardens, and as an understory plant.

Leucothoe axillaris thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soils. It is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from mulching to retain soil moisture. While it requires low amounts of water once established, it should not be allowed to dry out completely. It is not typically prone to serious pests or diseases, but root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. This shrub is also resistant to deer browsing, making it a good choice for areas with high deer populations.CC BY-SA 4.0
