Summary

Lewisia columbiana, commonly known as Columbian lewisia, is a perennial herb native to the alpine and subalpine areas of the Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. It thrives in rocky, well-drained soils and is often found in gravelly areas, cliff sides, and talus slopes. This species typically forms a low-growing rosette of fleshy, evergreen leaves from which multiple flowering stems arise, reaching up to 30 centimeters in height. Each stem can bear an impressive display of up to 100 flowers, blooming from late spring to early summer. The flowers are particularly notable for their white to pale pink petals, which are oval-shaped with a notched tip and marked with distinct dark pink veining, creating a striking contrast.

Columbian lewisia is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in rock gardens, alpine troughs, and other areas with excellent drainage. Its showy flowers make it a popular choice for adding color to challenging garden spots. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate some shade, especially in hotter climates. It is essential to avoid overwatering and to provide a well-draining soil mix to prevent root rot. Columbian lewisia is not known for significant disease or pest issues, but it can be sensitive to excessive moisture and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
