Estimated Native Range
Summary
Licuala ramsayi, commonly known as Queensland fan palm or Australian fan palm, is a slow-growing, evergreen palm native to the moist lowland rainforests and swampy areas along riverbanks in northeastern Queensland, Australia. It can form dense stands known as fan palm forests. This species typically features a single slender trunk that can reach up to 52 feet tall and 8 inches in diameter. The palm is noted for its large, circular, pleated leaves that can span up to 7 feet wide, giving it a distinctive and tropical appearance. The leaves are bright green and fan-shaped, with notched edges. Queensland fan palm does not have a prominent flowering season, but when it does flower, the blooms are small and inconspicuous, followed by red fruit that is attractive to wildlife, such as cassowaries.
In cultivation, Licuala ramsayi is valued for its dramatic foliage and is often used as a focal point in tropical and subtropical gardens. It is also suitable for indoor use in large atriums or conservatories. This palm prefers a humid environment with dappled shade or morning sun and protection from strong winds. It requires consistently moist soil with good drainage and can tolerate temporary waterlogging. While it is relatively low maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and root rot if overwatered or if drainage is poor. Gardeners should be aware that it is slow-growing and may take many years to reach its full height.CC BY-SA 4.0
