Summary
Ligustrum sinensis, commonly known as Chinese privet, is a deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub native to a variety of habitats in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, including forest margins, scrub areas, and along riverbanks. It typically grows 6-23 feet tall and wide, with densely hairy shoots and opposite, glossy, dark green leaves. From late spring to early summer, it produces small, fragrant white flowers in panicles, which are highly attractive to pollinators. These are followed by small, spherical, black berries that are poisonous to humans but can be spread by birds, contributing to its invasive potential.
Chinese privet is valued for its dense foliage and rapid growth rate, making it a popular choice for hedges, screens, and topiary in gardens. It thrives in a range of soil types, from clay to loam, and prefers well-drained conditions. While it can grow in both full sun and partial shade, flowering and subsequent berry production are more abundant in sunnier locations. It requires moderate water but can tolerate drought once established. Gardeners should be cautious, as it can become invasive outside its native range, particularly in the southeastern United States, where it has formed dense thickets in natural areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
