Summary

Lilium columbianum, commonly known as Columbia Lily, is a deciduous perennial herb native to moist meadows, open woodlands, and forest clearings in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, including Oregon and Washington, as well as in Southwestern Canada, such as British Columbia. It can grow up to 1.2 meters (3.9 ft) tall and produces a striking display of orange flowers, each with darker spots, from June through early August. The tepals are 3 to 6 cm long, and the flowers emit a light fragrance. The leaves of Columbia Lily are arranged in whorls around the stem, a characteristic feature of true lilies. This species is particularly noted for its showy blooms and the ability to attract pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds.

Columbia Lily is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in native plant gardens, woodland gardens, and as a naturalizing plant. It requires three to five years to mature from seed, but cultivated bulbs can be divided or bulb scales may be used for propagation, which is a quicker method. This lily thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium amounts of water with well-drained soil. While it is not commonly afflicted by serious disease or pest problems, it can be susceptible to lily beetle infestations. Gardeners should be aware of this potential issue and monitor for signs of damage.CC BY-SA 4.0
