Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lilium davidii, commonly known as David’s Lily, is a perennial herbaceous bulb native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas and south central China. It thrives in alpine meadows and forest margins at elevations of 2,500 to 4,000 meters. This species can reach up to 5 feet in height and produces racemes of up to 20 unscented, nodding flowers. The flowers have recurved tepals that are orange or reddish-orange and bloom from July to August, adding a vibrant splash of color to the garden during the mid to late summer months.
David’s Lily is valued for its striking flowers and is often used in ornamental plantings, naturalized areas, and botanical collections. Its bulbs are also edible and have been traditionally consumed in its native range. The plant prefers well-drained, loamy soils with moderate moisture and can tolerate partial shade, although it flourishes in full sun. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to lily beetle infestations and viral diseases. Gardeners should be aware that it forms bulbils which can lead to self-seeding if not managed.CC BY-SA 4.0
