Summary

Linanthus dianthiflorus, commonly known as Fringed Linanthus, is an annual herb native to chaparral, grasslands, and coastal sage scrub in Southern California and Baja California. This plant is adapted to Mediterranean-type climates with wet winters and dry summers. It typically grows to a modest size, with a very thin, hairy stem no more than about 12 centimeters long. The inflorescence bears several leaves and one or more flowers with hairy leaflike sepals. Each flower has pale pink lobes with fringed or toothed tips and purple spots at the bases, and the throat of the flower features yellow and white coloration, blooming from late winter to early spring. The flowers are quite showy despite the plant’s small size.

Fringed Linanthus is appreciated for its delicate, ornamental flowers that add a splash of color to rock gardens, native plant gardens, and wildflower meadows. It is relatively easy to grow from seed and can be used to create a naturalistic setting. This plant prefers full sun exposure and can tolerate drought once established, requiring only moderate amounts of water. It thrives in well-draining soils and is often found in sandy or gravelly substrates in its native habitat. While not commonly found in cultivation, it can be a charming addition to a garden that focuses on native species.CC BY-SA 4.0
