Summary
Linum rigidum, commonly known as Stiffstem Flax, is a perennial herb that is often treated as an annual, native to the prairies and open grasslands of the Central United States and the Great Plains. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters) and a width of 0.4-0.9 feet (0.1-0.3 meters). Stiffstem Flax has a compact, upright growth habit with stiff stems and narrow, lanceolate leaves. It produces vibrant orange and yellow flowers from late spring to early summer, which are particularly showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Stiffstem Flax is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalized areas. It is also used in wildflower gardens and as a border plant. This species requires minimal maintenance once established and is resistant to most pests and diseases. However, it can be susceptible to root rot if grown in poorly drained soils.
