Summary

Liriodendron tulipifera, commonly known as Tulip Tree or Tulip Poplar, is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America, specifically the Eastern U.S. and Gulf States, where it thrives in mixed deciduous forests, often along streams and in deep, fertile valleys. It is one of the tallest native trees, occasionally reaching heights of 192 feet (58 meters), with a trunk diameter of 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 meters). The typical height ranges from 80–150 feet (24–46 meters), and it usually exhibits a pyramidal to conical form, with a broad, spreading canopy at maturity. The Tulip Tree is renowned for its distinctive tulip-shaped flowers that are yellow with an orange band at the base, blooming in late spring to early summer. The flowers are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.

The Tulip Tree is valued for its fast growth, stately form, and unique flowers. It is often used as a specimen tree in large landscapes, parks, and as a street tree in urban settings. It is also appreciated for its brilliant yellow fall foliage. This species requires full sun to part shade, and while it prefers deep, rich, and moist soil, it is adaptable to a range of soil conditions, provided they are well-drained. It is not drought-tolerant and may need supplemental watering during dry periods. The Tulip Tree is relatively free of serious pests and diseases but can be susceptible to aphids and scale insects. It is not recommended for small gardens due to its large size and potential for invasive root systems.CC BY-SA 4.0
