Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lithospermum caroliniense, commonly known as the hairy puccoon, is a perennial herb native to prairies, savannas, and open woodlands in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States, as well as Canadian provinces surrounding the Great Lakes. It typically grows to a height of 1 to 2.5 feet and is characterized by its rough, hairy stems and foliage. The plant produces large, showy, yellow-orange flowers up to 1 inch in diameter with five petals, the basal parts of which are fused into a long corolla tube. These flowers bloom in late spring to early summer and are attractive to a variety of pollinators.
The hairy puccoon is valued for its bright, tubular flowers that add a splash of color to native plant gardens and restoration projects. It is drought-tolerant, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-maintenance landscapes. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun and requires well-drained, sandy, lime-free soil. While it is not a heavy feeder, the plant benefits from a moderately fertile environment. It is not commonly afflicted by diseases or pests, but it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage. Due to its deep taproot, it is best to plant it where it will not need to be moved.CC BY-SA 4.0
