Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lobelia fenestralis, commonly known as Fringeleaf Lobelia, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the chaparral and desert scrub regions of the Southwestern USA and Northern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of up to 1 foot (0.3 meters). Fringeleaf Lobelia has a compact form with narrow, lance-shaped leaves that give it a delicate appearance. From late spring to early summer, it produces tubular flowers that are most commonly blue, but can also be found in purple and white shades. These flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies.
Fringeleaf Lobelia is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant flowers, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and rock gardens. It is often used in border plantings and as a ground cover in areas with dry, well-draining soil. This plant thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and while it prefers medium amounts of water, it is quite adaptable once established. It is not known for having aggressive roots or being prone to serious diseases, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. However, it may be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
