Summary

Lomandra hystrix, commonly known as Green Mat-rush or Creek Mat-rush, is a perennial, rhizomatous herb native to a variety of habitats in eastern Australia, including moist open forests, forest margins, and riparian zones along creeks and rivers. It typically grows to about 80-100 cm in height with leaves that are 10-20 mm wide, forming dense tussocks. The plant is known for its strappy, bright green leaves and its ability to withstand poor drainage and occasional flooding. It produces small, yellow, spiky inflorescences in spring and summer, which are somewhat showy and attract native insects.

Green Mat-rush is valued for its hardiness and low maintenance, making it an excellent choice for erosion control, revegetation projects, and as a durable ground cover in urban landscapes. It is also used in ornamental gardens for its foliage texture and resilience to difficult growing conditions. This plant tolerates a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade and prefers soils with slow drainage. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it will also tolerate periods of wet soil. There are no major disease or pest issues, but it can occasionally suffer from root rot in overly saturated soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
