Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lomatia fraseri, commonly known as Silky Lomatia, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests in Eastern Australia. It can grow up to 8–11 meters (25–36 ft) high but is often smaller in exposed areas. This species features variable leaf shapes, which can be an attractive characteristic in garden settings. The flowers, which are white to cream, are borne in racemes up to 12 cm (5 in) long and are densely packed, making them more conspicuous than those of other Lomatia species. These inflorescences bloom from December to February, followed by the development of dark grey follicles, 1.5 to 3 cm long, which mature from April to October.
Silky Lomatia is valued for its lush foliage and the textural contrast its leaves provide in a garden. It is suitable for use in shaded garden areas, as an understory plant, or in mixed borders. The plant’s moderate frost tolerance and preference for part-shade make it a versatile choice for temperate gardens. It requires medium amounts of water and benefits from organic mulch, especially when young. Silky Lomatia prefers soils with medium drainage and can be propagated by seed or cutting. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it may suffer from root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
