Summary

Lonicera ciliosa, commonly known as Orange Honeysuckle or Western Trumpet Honeysuckle, is a deciduous climbing shrub native to the forested regions of western North America, particularly in open woodlands and along forest edges where it can receive dappled sunlight. It typically grows up to 20 feet (6 meters) tall and is known for its hollow twigs. The leaves are opposite, oval, and 1.6–3.9 inches (4–10 cm) long, with the last pair on each twig fused at the base to form a disc. This species is particularly noted for its striking orange-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers, which are 0.79–1.57 inches (2–4 cm) long with five lobes and are produced in whorls above the disc-leaf at the shoot ends. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, and the blooms are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. The fruit is a translucent orange-red berry, less than 0.39 inches (1 cm) in diameter, which provides food for birds and small mammals.

Orange Honeysuckle is valued for its ornamental flowers, which add a splash of color to garden settings. It is often used for trellises, fences, and arbors due to its climbing habit. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, adapting well to a range of soil drainage conditions from slow to fast. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it benefits from occasional pruning to maintain shape and promote vigorous growth. Gardeners should be aware that in some areas, it can spread aggressively if not managed properly.CC BY-SA 4.0
