Summary

Lonicera japonica, commonly known as Japanese Honeysuckle, is an evergreen or semi-deciduous perennial vine native to forest edges, scrublands, and along riverbanks in Northeast Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. It can grow up to 10 meters (33 feet) high, twining around trees and structures. The plant features oval, dark green leaves and highly fragrant flowers that bloom from spring to summer, starting white and fading to yellow. These flowers are followed by black berries. Japanese Honeysuckle is valued for its sweetly scented flowers and is used as ground cover, for erosion control, and in traditional Chinese medicine. It thrives in a range of light conditions, from full sun to part shade, and prefers moist, well-drained soils but can adapt to various soil types.

In cultivation, Japanese Honeysuckle is appreciated for its vigorous growth, ability to cover unsightly areas, and its fragrant flowers which attract pollinators. It is often used in urban landscapes, gardens, and as a container plant. However, it requires regular pruning to keep it under control and prevent it from becoming invasive. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and leaf spot diseases. Gardeners should be cautious as it is considered invasive outside its native range, with aggressive growth that can choke out native plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
