Summary

Lupinus chamissonis, commonly known as Chamisso Bush Lupine, is an evergreen subshrub or shrub native to coastal dunes and bluffs in California. It typically grows 1.5–2 meters (4 ft 11 in – 6 ft 7 in) tall with a spreading, bushy habit. The inflorescence features whorls of flowers each about one to 1.5 centimeters (0.59 in) long, which are light purple to blue with a distinctive yellow spot on the banner. The fruit is a hairy legume pod 2.5–3.5 centimeters (0.98–1.38 in) long. Chamisso Bush Lupine is notable for its attractive flowers and ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils, making it a valuable plant for habitat restoration and erosion control.

This species is well-suited for coastal gardens, naturalized areas, and as part of a native plant landscape. It is highly drought-tolerant, requiring very low amounts of water once established, and prefers full sun exposure. The plant is adapted to sandy, well-drained soils and is tolerant of saline conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases in poorly drained soils. Gardeners should be aware that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.CC BY-SA 4.0
