Summary
Lupinus succulentus, commonly known as Hollowleaf Annual Lupine, is an annual herb native to open woodlands, grasslands, and chaparral in California and Baja California and Arizona. It can grow up to 1 meter (3.3 ft) in height, with the amount of fertility and moisture generally dictating the plant’s stature. The plant features a fleshy stem and palmately compound leaves, which give it a lush appearance. The inflorescence is a series of whorls of flowers, each between 1 and 2 centimeters long, typically purple-blue with a white or pink patch on its banner. There are also variations in flower color, with some displaying shades of light purple, pink, and white. The fruit is a roughly hairy legume pod up to 5 centimeters long and about 1 centimeter wide. The blooming period is from April to June, and the flowers are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees.
Hollowleaf Annual Lupine is valued for its water tolerance, making it a suitable choice for ornamental planting in flower borders, native plant gardens, and wildlife habitats. It is also used in natural landscaping projects. This lupine is relatively easy to maintain and can thrive in moist clay or heavy soils, preferring full sun exposure. It requires low to medium amounts of water and well-draining soil. While it is not commonly known for any significant problems, it can suffer from fungal diseases in overly wet conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
