Summary

Luzula ulophylla, commonly known as Common Woodrush, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the tussock grasslands and subalpine regions of the South Island of New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 0.3 feet (0.09 meters) and spreads 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). This plant forms dense clumps of dark green, glossy leaves that provide year-round interest. The flowers are small, brown, and not particularly showy, appearing in dense clusters on upright stems during spring and early summer.

Common Woodrush is valued for its low maintenance and textural foliage, making it an excellent ground cover for garden borders, rockeries, and woodland settings. It is also used to stabilize soil on slopes and banks. In cultivation, it prefers partial shade to full sun, consistent moisture, and well-drained soils. It is tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. While generally disease-free, it can occasionally suffer from rust or leaf spot. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant pest problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
