Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lyonia ferruginea, commonly known as Rusty Staggerbush, is an evergreen shrub native to pine flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, and dry, sandy uplands of the Southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 8-20 feet (2.4-6.1 meters) and a width of up to 3 feet (0.9 meters), with a rounded to irregular form. The plant is named for its reddish-brown, exfoliating bark and the rusty-colored hairs on the undersides of its leaves. Rusty Staggerbush produces clusters of urn-shaped, white to pinkish flowers in the spring and early summer, which are moderately showy and attract pollinators.
Rusty Staggerbush is valued for its year-round foliage and springtime flowers, making it suitable for naturalistic plantings and as an understory shrub in woodland gardens. It is also used for restoration projects in its native range. This shrub is adapted to acidic, well-drained soils and can tolerate drought once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners. It thrives in full sun to partial shade. While generally pest-free, it can suffer from leaf spot and root rot if conditions are too wet.CC BY-SA 4.0
