Summary
Lyonia fruticosa, commonly known as Coastal Plain Staggerbush, is an evergreen shrub native to the sandy, acidic soils of pine flatwoods, savannas, and bogs in the Southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height and width of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters), with a rounded form. The plant features clusters of bell-shaped white flowers in the spring and early summer, which are moderately showy and attract pollinators. The foliage can add texture to garden settings, and in some conditions, the leaves may turn reddish in the fall.
Coastal Plain Staggerbush is valued for its adaptability to various light conditions, thriving in full sun to part shade. It is a suitable choice for naturalistic plantings, borders, and as an understory shrub in woodland gardens. This shrub prefers acidic soil with slow to medium drainage and requires medium amounts of water, making it a good candidate for areas with these soil conditions. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can suffer from leaf spot diseases and may require occasional pruning to maintain its shape. It is not known for being invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
