Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lyonia mariana, commonly known as Piedmont Staggerbush, is an evergreen shrub native to the understory of pine flatwoods, savannas, and bogs in the Southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height and width of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters), with a rounded form that can be irregular. The leaves are glossy green, and the plant produces clusters of bell-shaped flowers that are pink and white, blooming in the spring. These flowers are moderately showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Piedmont Staggerbush is valued for its year-round foliage and spring floral display. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, as a border shrub, or in wetland restoration projects due to its tolerance of wet conditions. It thrives in acidic, moist to wet soils and can tolerate occasional flooding. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is also capable of growing in shadier conditions. This shrub is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to leaf spot diseases and requires good air circulation to minimize fungal issues. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness.CC BY-SA 4.0
