Summary
Lysiloma candidum, commonly known as Palo Blanco, is a deciduous tree native to the dry deciduous forests and thorn scrub of Northwest Mexico, including Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California. It typically grows to a height of 12-20 feet and a width of 8-12 feet. The tree has a distinctive appearance with its smooth, white bark that peels away in thin sheets, revealing a greenish layer beneath. The creamy-white, globose clusters of flowers bloom in March through May, perfuming the air with a light, spicy fragrance, and are quite showy, attracting pollinators. These flowers are followed by red-brown pods up to 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) long that hang delicately on the thin branches, adding to the ornamental value of the tree.
Palo Blanco is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in hot, arid environments, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and low-water-use gardens. It is often used in urban landscapes, as a patio tree, and for creating light, dappled shade in garden settings. This tree is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal water once established and growing well in soils with medium to fast drainage. It prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
