Summary

Lysimachia clethroides, commonly known as Gooseneck Loosestrife, is a hardy herbaceous perennial native to damp woodlands, wet meadows, and along stream banks in China, Korea, Japan and the Russia’s Far East. It typically grows 24-39 inches tall and features upright stems with oblong to lance-shaped leaves. From mid to late summer, it produces distinctive curved spikes of tiny, snow-white flowers that resemble a goose’s neck, hence the name. The flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators.

Gooseneck Loosestrife is valued for its unique flower form and is often used in borders, cottage gardens, and water margins. It is also suitable for rain gardens due to its preference for moist conditions. While it prefers consistently moist, fertile soil, it can tolerate some dryness once established. It thrives in full sun to part shade. However, gardeners should be cautious as it can spread aggressively by rhizomes, potentially becoming invasive. It is advisable to plant it in areas where it can be controlled or to use root barriers. In regions where it is not invasive, it can be an excellent ground cover.CC BY-SA 4.0
