Estimated Native Range
Summary
Macaranga capensis, commonly known as River Leaf, East African Macaranga, or Forest Macaranga, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the moist forests and riparian zones of Eastern and Southern Africa. It typically reaches a height of 15-25 feet (4.6-8 meters) and a width of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters). The tree has a spreading habit with large, heart-shaped leaves that provide a dense canopy. Its green flowers, which bloom in the summer, are small and often overlooked in favor of the foliage. However, the plant is valued for its large, attractive leaves and its ability to grow in shaded conditions.
River Leaf is appreciated for its rapid growth and adaptability to various soil types, making it suitable for reforestation projects and as a pioneer species in disturbed areas. It is also used for shade in coffee plantations and can be planted in urban areas as a shade tree or ornamental. In cultivation, it requires medium amounts of water and thrives in part shade to full shade. It is tolerant of medium or fast-draining loam or clay soils. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to leaf spot diseases in overly wet conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
