Estimated Native Range
Summary
Magnolia acuminata, commonly known as Cucumber Tree, is a deciduous tree native to the rich, well-drained soils of deciduous forests in the Eastern United States and Southern Ontario, Canada. It often grows as a solitary tree rather than in groups, reaching heights of 15–20 meters (49–66 feet) in cultivation, and can surpass 30 meters (98 feet) in the wild. The Cucumber Tree has a pyramidal to rounded crown with large, oblong leaves that turn yellow-green in fall. Its flowers, which appear in late spring to early summer, are yellow-green and inconspicuous compared to other magnolias, but they give way to cucumber-shaped fruit that matures to a showy red in late summer.
The Cucumber Tree is valued for its stately form and as a shade tree in large parks and gardens. It is not suitable for street planting due to its size and the potential for fruit drop. This species thrives in full sun to part shade and requires ample water, preferring moist, well-drained soils. It is relatively low-maintenance once established but can be affected by magnolia scale and other pests. The tree’s wood is also commercially valuable, used in furniture and veneer production.CC BY-SA 4.0
