Estimated Native Range
Summary
Magnolia ashei, commonly known as Ashe’s Magnolia, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the moist, rich soils of ravines and along streams in the Florida Panhandle. It typically grows to a height of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters) and a width of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters). This species is noted for its large, showy flowers that are creamy white with a purple base, blooming in the late spring to early summer. The flowers are fragrant and can be up to 12 inches across, making them quite spectacular. The leaves are also large, up to 24 inches long, contributing to the plant’s tropical appearance.
Ashe’s Magnolia is valued for its striking flowers and relatively small size, which makes it suitable for residential gardens. It is used as a specimen plant or in mixed shrub borders. While it prefers a sunny or partly shaded location, it requires protection from strong winds. The soil should be acidic, moist, and well-drained. It is less drought-tolerant than other magnolias and may require additional watering during dry periods. There are no major pest or disease problems, but it can be sensitive to cold temperatures, so it is best suited to USDA zones 7-9.CC BY-SA 4.0
