Summary
Magnolia denudata, commonly known as Yulan Magnolia, is a deciduous tree native to the forested regions of central and eastern China, where it grows in a variety of soil types including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, often in valleys or along riverbanks. It reaches up to 30 feet (9.1 m) tall with a rounded, thickly branched form and a coarse texture. The ovate leaves are bright green, measuring 15 cm in length and 8 cm in width. The bark is coarse and dark gray. Noteworthy are its large, showy white flowers, 10–16 cm in diameter, which bloom from early to late spring and emit a citrus-lemon fragrance. However, the flowers are susceptible to frost damage, which can cause browning. The Yulan Magnolia is celebrated for its ornamental value, with its striking floral display earning it the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
This magnolia is a popular choice for gardens and landscapes, valued for its beautiful spring blossoms and relatively easy maintenance. It is often used as a specimen tree or in mixed borders. While it prefers rich, moist soil, it is adaptable to various soil conditions, provided they offer good drainage. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water. Gardeners should plant it in a sheltered location to protect it from harsh weather.CC BY-SA 4.0
