Summary

Magnolia figo, commonly known as Banana Shrub or Port Wine Magnolia, is an evergreen shrub native to the subtropical forests of China. It typically grows to a height of 3–4 meters (10–13 feet) and is known for its dense, compact form. The Banana Shrub is valued for its small, cup-shaped flowers that bloom in the spring. The flowers are cream-white to light purple, with a purple-brown center, and emit a strong, sweet banana-like fragrance due to the presence of isoamyl alcohol. The glossy, leathery leaves are a dark green and can grow up to 10 cm long, adding to the plant’s ornamental appeal.

Magnolia figo is often used in gardens as a specimen plant, tall evergreen hedge, or foundation planting due to its fragrant flowers and attractive foliage. It is relatively easy to maintain and can adapt to a range of soil pH levels, from acidic to alkaline. However, it does require protection from strong winds and is susceptible to scale insects and black sooty mold. For optimal growth, it should be planted in a location with full sun to part shade and in well-drained soil. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Pruning can be done to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased wood.CC BY-SA 4.0
