Estimated Native Range
Summary
Magnolia kobus, commonly known as Kobus Magnolia, is a deciduous tree or large shrub native to forested areas and stream banks in Japan and Korea. It typically grows at a slow rate to a height of 8–15 m (25–50 ft) and a spread of up to 10 m (35 ft). The Kobus Magnolia is notable for its early spring blossoms, which are fragrant white flowers with hints of pale pink, each about 10 cm (4 in) in diameter, appearing before the foliage. The flowers are not particularly showy due to their pale color but are appreciated for their fragrance. The summer foliage is dark green, and the fruit consists of groups of small red seeds that are attractive to birds. The bark on older trunks is grey-brown, while new stems are green with small brown spots, and broken branches or twigs emit a strong odor.
Kobus Magnolia is valued for its elegant form, fragrant flowers, and relatively low maintenance requirements. It is used in gardens and parks for its ornamental qualities and as a specimen plant. While it prefers full sun or part shade, it is adaptable to a range of soil conditions, provided they offer good drainage. It is not known for having serious disease or pest problems, but it can be susceptible to leaf spot and canker. Gardeners should be aware that it may take several years for young trees to begin flowering.CC BY-SA 4.0
