Summary

Magnolia loebneri, commonly known as Loebner Magnolia, is a deciduous hybrid tree or large shrub of garden origin, resulting from the cross between Magnolia kobus and Magnolia stellata. It is a slow-growing, elegant, and compact multi-stemmed plant that typically reaches a height of 20 feet (6.1 meters) and a slightly wider spread at maturity. Loebner Magnolia is particularly noted for its late-blooming fragrant flowers, which emerge on bare branches and create a striking display. The deep pink buds open to reveal flowers with informal strap-like tepals, pale shell pink on the upper surfaces and darker pink-purple underneath. This hybrid magnolia is adapted to temperate climates and is hardy to USDA Zone 4.

Loebner Magnolia is valued for its spring floral display, which is particularly effective before the leaves emerge. It is often used in residential gardens, as a specimen plant, or in small groupings. It thrives best in acidic soils and requires full sun to part shade, with medium to high water needs, and prefers soils with medium to slow drainage. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to magnolia scale, and its early blooms can be damaged by late frosts.CC BY-SA 4.0
