The Smiling Monkey Tree is notable for its large, glossy, dark green leaves and its fragrant, cream to white flowers that bloom sporadically throughout the year, with a peak in late winter to early spring. The flowers are considered showy due to their size and the contrast with the foliage.

This Magnolia species is valued for its ornamental features, including its evergreen foliage and year-round flowering habit. It is used in cultivation for urban planting, as a specimen tree, and in residential gardens for its aesthetic appeal. The Smiling Monkey Tree prefers a sheltered location with full sun to part shade, consistent medium moisture, and well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It is relatively low maintenance but may require protection from strong winds. While it is not known for serious pest or disease problems, it can be susceptible to scale insects and leaf spot.
