Summary
Magnolia officinalis, commonly known as Houpu Magnolia, is a deciduous tree native to the mountainous forests and valleys of North and South Central China. It can reach up to 20 meters in height and is known for its thick, brown bark that remains un-fissured as the tree matures. The leaves of Houpu Magnolia are broad and ovate, measuring 20–40 cm in length and 11–20 cm in width, providing a lush, green canopy. From May to June, it produces fragrant flowers that are 10–15 cm wide, consisting of 9–12, sometimes up to 17, white tepals. These blooms are particularly showy and contribute to the tree’s ornamental value.
Houpu Magnolia is valued for its striking appearance and fragrant flowers, making it a favored choice for use in large gardens, parks, and as a specimen tree. It is also known for its medicinal properties, with the bark being used in traditional Chinese medicine. This magnolia prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade and requires medium amounts of water. It is adaptable to a range of soil drainage conditions, from slow to fast. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and canker diseases. Gardeners should also be aware that it may require space to accommodate its size as it grows.CC BY-SA 4.0
