Summary

Magnolia wilsonii, commonly known as Wilson’s Magnolia, is a deciduous small tree or large shrub native to the forest understory and mountainous regions of western China. It typically grows to 8–10 meters (26–33 ft) tall with a spreading habit. The leaves are dark green, providing a lush backdrop for the flowers. Wilson’s Magnolia is particularly noted for its striking flowers, which appear in late spring to early summer. The blooms are pendulous, 8–12 cm in diameter, with nine to twelve tepals. The outer three tepals are smaller, greenish, and sepal-like, while the main six are larger and pure white. The contrasting stamens and carpels are a vivid crimson, creating a dramatic visual effect. Due to their drooping nature, the flowers are often best appreciated from below.

Wilson’s Magnolia is valued for its elegant, pendulous flowers and its ability to thrive in a woodland garden setting. It is often used as a specimen plant in residential gardens and can also be found in botanical gardens and arboreta. This magnolia prefers a sheltered location with dappled sunlight or part shade, consistent moisture, and well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. It is relatively low maintenance but benefits from mulching and protection from strong winds. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and canker in poor conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
