Summary
Malus ×kaido, commonly known as Kaido Crabapple, is a deciduous hybrid tree that is a result of crossbreeding within the genus Malus. It is characterized by a moderate growth rate and typically reaches a height of 8-12 feet (2.4-3.7 meters) with a spread of 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters). The Kaido Crabapple is admired for its spring display of fragrant pink or white flowers, which are particularly showy and attract pollinators such as bees. Following the flowering season, the tree may produce small, decorative crabapples that can add interest to the garden landscape. The tree’s form is often rounded, creating an aesthetically pleasing silhouette.
Kaido Crabapple trees are valued for their ornamental flowers and compact size, which make them suitable for use in smaller gardens, as well as in urban and residential settings. They can be planted as specimen trees, in mixed borders, or used for creating flowering hedges. These trees are adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as the drainage is medium to fast. While they prefer full sun to part shade, they are relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate a variety of conditions once established. However, they can be susceptible to common apple diseases such as fire blight and apple scab, and may require preventive care or treatment to maintain health.CC BY-SA 4.0
