Summary

Malus domestica, commonly known as the Apple Tree, is a deciduous tree that originated from the domestication of Malus sieversii, found in the Tian Shan mountains of Kazakhstan. In cultivation, it typically grows 2 to 4.5 meters (6 to 15 feet) tall, though it can reach up to 9 meters (30 feet) in the wild. The size, shape, and branch density are influenced by rootstock selection and pruning practices. Apple trees feature alternately arranged dark green leaves with serrated margins and slightly downy undersides. In spring, blossoms emerge simultaneously with leaf budding, appearing on spurs and some long shoots. The 3 to 4 cm (1 to 1+1⁄2 in) flowers are white with a pink blush, fading to pure white, and are arranged in a cyme with 4–6 flowers. The "king bloom" is the central flower that opens first and can produce a larger fruit. The fruit, a pome, matures in late summer or autumn, with cultivars varying widely in size. Apple skin colors range from red, yellow, and green to pink or russet, with many bi- or tri-colored varieties available.

Apple Trees are highly valued for their fruit production, ornamental blossoms, and the variety of cultivars available for different climates and tastes. They are commonly used in orchards, home gardens, and for urban planting. Apple Trees require full sun and medium water, thriving in a range of soil drainage conditions from slow to fast. They are susceptible to a number of diseases, including apple scab, fire blight, and powdery mildew, as well as pests like codling moths and apple maggots. Regular maintenance, such as pruning and disease management, is necessary for healthy fruit production. While they can grow from seeds, to preserve the fruit quality of a specific cultivar, grafting or budding is recommended.CC BY-SA 4.0
