Summary
Mammillaria melanocentra, commonly known as Biznaga De Centrales Negras, is a perennial succulent native to the arid regions of Northeast Mexico, particularly found in desert scrub and rocky habitats. It typically grows to a height of 0.6 feet (0.2 meters) and a width of 0.5 feet (0.2 meters), forming a cylindrical shape with dense spines that can be black at the center, hence the name ’melanocentra’. The plant produces attractive pink flowers that appear in a ring near the top of the stem during the spring and summer months, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Biznaga De Centrales Negras is valued for its unique appearance and low water requirements, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a container plant for dry, sunny patios. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires very little maintenance, aside from protection from frost. It is best grown in well-draining soil, as it is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. This Mammillaria species is not known for significant pest or disease issues but should be monitored for mealybugs and fungal infections. It is not typically invasive when grown outside its native range, but care should be taken to avoid overwatering and to provide adequate drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
